Do you ever get the urge to challenge yourself? Well I did and now I’ve dragged some friends along too. Myself, Murray Speed, Ross Poole and Vicky Poole have taken on the challenge of completing the Rutland Team Marathon. Each of us will run 10.6km around the stunning scenery that is Rutland Water. Why are we putting ourselves through this gruelling feat I hear you ask? Rainbows Hospice is why.
Since 1994 Rainbows has opened its doors and hearts to children with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses and the people who love them most. As the East Midlands’ only hospice for children and young people, Rainbows is a place where children and their families can find care and support. The incredible team of nurses, doctors and support staff help relieve symptoms, improve quality of life, support parents and siblings through their bereavements and care for children until the end.
We have been able to see first-hand how much of an amazing job that Rainbows do, as Excellence Physio Director – Charlotte Smith is a carer for Vicky and Ross’s daughter as well as Murray and Camilla Speed’s son. Having got to know the families really well over recent years, it is clear to see that Rainbows not only help the children themselves but their parents and siblings too. Providing family fun days, weekend excursions and support groups. Having witnessed the impact this has on both families, we wanted to give something back and so our challenge was formed.
Now I know 10.6km might not seem that much to some of you highly tuned athletes or conquerors of the latest iron man challenges. But for a group of people who some (not mentioning any names) haven’t done any sport in almost 10 years and for some who are recovering from injury, this is going to be one hell of a challenge. But, hopefully it’ll be an incredible journey along the way and we would love for you to join us along our journey too Keep an eye across all our social media accounts for weekly training and fundraising updates.
