Reduce Your Injury Risk During Lockdown

With the current social distancing and lockdown status amid the Covid-19 pandemic, exercise and fitness is key to maintaining both physical and mental wellbeing. However, with more free time on our hands it’s difficult not to turn to exercise to steer ourselves away from boredom. If you’re used to exercising regularly then this shouldn’t be a shock to the system, but for those who don’t exercise regularly a sudden increase in physical exercise could lead to an injury. For yea

    Down Syndrome Awareness Day 2018

As many of you know, my amazing (and very outspoken and wilful) son Jack, has Down Syndrome (DS) so I’ve been puzzling all morning about how I cleverly connect nutrition and DS. Do I go into lots of detail about Omega-3 fatty acids and cognitive function? Digestive issues in DS and diet? Or do I keep it simple? I went for simple…a healthy, balanced diet is vital for everyone to lead a life of optimum health! Never mind whether you’ve got DS or not, good, basic, nutrition is k

How to Add 3 Years To Your Life

After crazily signing up to run the Rutland Half-Marathon, I’ve been pounding the streets of Rutland trying to get myself in shape for the looming challenge on Sunday April 8th. As part of the training regime, I’ve set myself one long run every Sunday. For ease of training that’s been around Oakham and the picturesque hills of Rutland. Whilst dragging my feet along and grumbling under my breath I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how many couples, families and individuals that

    Movember - A Man's World

Throughout the month of November, I attempted to complete a daily exercise challenge in aid of raising awareness for Men’s Health. Most people know November as ‘Movember’ where males grow moustaches to promote testicular cancer as well as other illnesses that can affect males. Deciding to do something slightly different, I set about completing a form of exercise every day throughout November whilst researching into the benefits that exercise can have on the body, especially i

    Food for Fertility

When trying for a baby, it is equally as important for men to ensure a healthy diet and lifestyle to improve the chances of conception. Important considerations include: Eat a balanced and varied diet. Meals and snacks should be based around lean protein with a variety of colourful vegetables and some complex carbohydrates (such as brown rice, rye bread, sweet potatoes, quinoa) Aim for a healthy weight. Being overweight or underweight can interfere with your chances of concei

Plantar Fasciitis - The Truth Behind The Pain

As the summer descends upon and the levels of exercise increase, so do the number of people complaining of a nuisance pain in the sole of their feet. More often than not, this is a result of the condition most commonly known as Plantar fasciitis. Interestingly, in the past week I have witnessed 6 people hobbling around with the condition. Over 80% of whom weren’t aware of the benefits physiotherapy could have on the pain. So this blog aims to help advise you on the condition

Foam Rolling - Worth the hype?

Many people have heard about the dreaded foam roller and how painful it can be, often being put off by the thought of it as soon it’s mentioned. However, It’s fastly becoming one of the most used self-myofascial release techniques and becoming very popular amongst both elite and amateur athletes. But how painful and beneficial can it actually be? Over the past month I set out to find out the real benefits and just how much of an impact it can have on your performance. Muscle

    Heat or ICE?

The question we get asked so frequently is ‘Do I apply ICE or Heat to my injury?’ Well here’s a little bit more information to help you decide …. ICE Ice is usually used for the more acute injuries, such as Sprained ligaments, muscles tears or bruises. Especially if the affected area is beginning to swell. Ice is excellent at reducing swelling as it vaso-constricts (narrows) the blood vessels, limiting the internal bleeding / inflammation occurring at the injury site. It is b
